EVALUATION – PROVIDING OPTIONS AND SCAFFOLDING

Facilitators: Kathryn Zeiler, Marina Adshade

Learning occurs in a variety of formats and over a certain amount of time - why then, do we not provide a variety of evaluation formats to our students? Does the one-size fits all assessment model adequately reflect skills acquisition and mastery? How can we help our students develop mastery? At this session participants will hear from two instructors about 1) their approach to the idea of a "buffet" wherein students can customize the evaluation of their learning by choosing from a set of options and 2) from a ‘staged process’ another instructor has been using in her senior Economics course to help her students hone their writing skills. Both instructors will discuss the challenges and successes of their evaluation methods and share checklists, rubrics and other materials they have developed as part of their assessment methods.
